Key Details: What: An uncontrolled eruption from the Lakeview No. 1 well, part of the Midway-Sunset Oil Field. When: Began March 15, 1910, and flowed for 544 days (18 months), stopping in September 1911. Scale: Initially flowed 18,000 barrels/day, peaking at 100,000 barrels/day, releasing millions of gallons of crude oil, creating a vast "lake". Impact: Demolished the derrick and created a large crater. Became a major tourist attraction, with people even rowing on the oil lake. Caused oil prices to drop by half due to market saturation. Workers built earthen dams to contain the flow, but much oil was lost to the ground. Legacy: The site is marked by California Historical Landmark No. 485, and remnants of the oil-soaked ground are still visible today. Significance: The Lakeview Gusher was a defining moment in the California oil boom, showcasing immense potential but also massive environmental disruption, highlighting the sheer power of underground pressure and the challenges of containing such events.
