Back in March a picture of feminist, journalist, and social and political activist Gloria Steinem wearing a clitoris ring began circulating. The ring was given to her by Brooklyn-based artist “Swoon” aka Caledonia Curry. Since it surfaced the picture of the clitoring is taking the internet by storm.
So what exactly is the clitoring? They are an anatomically correct set of rings and pendants made by New York’s The PenelopiJones Experiment to “illustrate the newly rediscovered internal structure of the clitoris.” The rings and pendants measure between 3 1/2 and 5 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide on average. These super sexy rings are a sure to be noticed, and they are a very unique conversation piece that encourage woman to rediscover their own anatomy, and the secrets of the clit that are hidden inside of us.
Does this ring looks more like a wishbone that your beloved button-like clitoris? Until 2009 (yes, 2009!) the internal structure of the clitoris was a completely unknown to scientists. An MRI revealed that the head or glans of your clitoris is only the tip of the iceberg! New York’s Museum of Sex blog explains further:
The fact is though, that most of the clitoris is subterranean, consisting of two corpora cavernosa (corpus cavernosum when referring to the structure as a whole), two crura (crus when referring to the structure as a whole), and the clitoral vestibules or bulbs. The glans is connected to the body or shaft of the internal clitoris, which is made up of two corpora cavernosa. When erect, the corpora cavernosa encompass the vagina on either side, as if they were wrapping around it giving it a big hug! The corpus cavernosum also extends further, bifurcating again to form the two crura. These two legs extend up to 9cm, pointing toward the thighs when at rest, and stretching back toward the spine when erect. To picture them at rest, imagine the crura as a wishbone, coming together at the body of the clitoris where they attach to the pubic symphysis.
