Sub drop is a very real physical and emotional effect that is one of the biggest plagues of BDSM relationships. If you don’t know what that is, a sub drop is the submissive’s reaction to the drop in endorphins and adrenaline that is induced during play and sometimes just intense situations. For some, it can send them into sub or little space. For others, the effect can cause depression and flu like symptoms. Recognizing sub drop is one of the most important things for a Dom during the aftercare process. So here is what you need to keep an eye out for.
Physical Symptoms

Symptoms can vary from sub to sub and can be any one or combination of the following: Fatigue, crying, aches and pains, stomach aches, cold hands and/or feet, stiffness, or cravings for sweets. There are preventative measures you can take to try to alleviate these symptoms if you have noticed your sub is prone to a sub drop. Making sure your sub has had a high protein snack and done some stretching before play is great for warming and preparing their muscles for the strain of a play session.
Emotional Symptoms

Just as the physical symptoms are unique person to person so are the emotional ones. Emotional symptoms to look out for are sadness or melancholy, anxiety, agitation, depression, fear, confusion, guilt, or shame. Preparedness is key if your sub suffers emotional reactions during sub drop. Have water and fast sugars on hand. And amp up the aftercare!
While not all dominants give aftercare, or at least sufficient aftercare a sub that suffers for serious sub drop will require aftercare. Even if it is their personal responsibility to take care of themselves. Make sure that all physical needs are met first. The 3B’s Bandages, Blankets, and Beverages. Then find what soothes the sub most, perhaps a nap or even just some alone down time will help get them back in the right head space.
